How to Choose the Right Handle for Your Front Door
Lever, backplate or rose, pull bar, materials and backset: how to choose a front-door handle that is stylish, sturdy and secure.
The handle is the part of the door you touch most. It shapes the look of the façade, but it also affects security and everyday comfort. Here is how to choose well.
Lever, knob or pull bar?
- Double lever: a lever inside and outside. Convenient, but the door opens from outside unless it is locked with the key.
- Inside lever with an outside knob or fixed handle: the door only opens from outside with the key. This is the most common set-up for front doors.
- Pull bar: a long vertical bar, very contemporary, suited to tall modern doors.
Backplate or rose?
A backplate covers the lock over a good height and includes the cylinder opening. A rose is smaller, round or square. For security, a plate or rose fitted with a cylinder guard prevents the cylinder from being gripped with pliers.
Measurements to check
Before buying, measure:
- the centre distance between the lever spindle and the cylinder;
- the door thickness, which sets the length of screws and spindle;
- the spindle size, commonly 7 or 8 mm.
A handle that does not match the existing lock would force you to change the whole mechanism.
Materials
- Stainless steel: corrosion-resistant, ideal near the sea.
- Aluminium: light and affordable, in many finishes.
- Brass: noble and durable, with a patina that evolves over time.
For a weather-exposed door, choose a finish treated for outdoor use.
Comfort and accessibility
An ergonomic lever that is easy to grab with wet or full hands makes daily life easier. For people with reduced mobility, a handle at a suitable height that needs little force is best.
