Why timber naturally damps vibration, and how to combine it with acoustic glazing and efficient gaskets for a truly quiet window.
Timber has a well-deserved acoustic reputation: its fibrous structure naturally damps vibration. Combined with today’s glazing and gaskets, it makes for windows that perform very well against noise.
Why wood is a good acoustic ally
- Damping: wood fibres dissipate part of the vibration energy, whereas a very stiff material transmits more of it.
- Mass: generous solid or laminated timber sections add mass to the frame, which slows sound transmission.
- Stability: laminated timber limits distortion, ensuring steady contact with the gaskets over time.
The glazing is still decisive
The frame is only part of the window’s surface. For real acoustic performance, you need suitable glass:
- asymmetric double glazing, with panes of different thickness;
- acoustic laminated glass for the noisiest settings;
- a rebate deep enough in the timber to accept these thicker units.
Seals and closing
A modern timber window has perimeter gaskets on the sash and sometimes a central seal. Multi-point hardware presses the sash evenly against the seals: this is essential for acoustic glass to deliver its full potential.
Maintenance sustains performance
Well-protected timber does not warp. Renewing the stain or paint according to exposure, checking gaskets and having sashes adjusted ensures lasting sound insulation. A sash that has developed play quickly loses its acoustic qualities.
Timber or timber-aluminium?
Composite timber-aluminium windows combine timber inside with an aluminium cladding outside. They keep the acoustic and aesthetic qualities of wood while greatly reducing maintenance on the façade side.

Timber offers an excellent acoustic base, but it is the combination of a generous frame, acoustic glazing, quality seals and careful installation that makes a window truly quiet.
